King Abdulaziz Historical Center

Challenge: The King Abdul Aziz Historic Center (KAHC) was envisioned as a cultural and historical landmark that honors the legacy of King Abdul Aziz while revitalizing the traditional urban fabric of Riyadh. The challenge was to seamlessly integrate new architectural elements with the site’s historic structures, preserving the authenticity of Najdi architecture while introducing modern functionalities. Approach: DAO’s master plan for the center was deeply rooted in the principles of Najdi architecture, creating an interconnected complex that celebrates heritage while accommodating contemporary uses. The project revolved around a network of courtyards and narrow alleys, ensuring harmony between the new interventions and the existing structures. Key components included: Darat al-Malik Abdulaziz Building: A focal point of the center, designed to serve as a repository of historical documents and cultural exhibitions. Al-Murabba Palace Restoration: Preserving the palace’s historic significance while adapting its spaces for modern exhibitions and public engagement. National Museum Integration: Blending cultural storytelling with architectural authenticity, reinforcing the historical essence of the site. King Abdul Aziz Mosque Renovation: Enveloping the existing structure within a contemporary interpretation of traditional design, ensuring it remains a central element in the historic setting.
