The 2023 Dewan Award for Architecture, organized by the Tamayouz Excellence Award in collaboration with Dewan Architects + Engineers, focused on the theme "The New Basra Waterfront." It called for participants worldwide to address specific urban issues in Iraq, seeking proposals to transform the underutilized Dakhel Island into a popular leisure destination for locals and tourists. IAPA wins second place in international competition. Leveraging a holistic approach, Dakhil Island serves as a beacon for urban development in Iraq. By blending tradition and modernity, we highlight the island's rich heritage, paying homage to its deep-rooted history and showcasing the potential of modern urban planning. We envision Dakhil Island as an architectural oasis symbolizing the city’s revival. It will provide citizens comfort and relaxation, reflecting local cultural symbols, honoring our shared heritage, and incorporating Islamic patterns.Our design emphasizes variation and repetition. Using a grid system, we embed spaces for markets and cultural centers. This grid, enhanced by windcatchers, weaves the cityscape, connecting parking to bustling activity areas above.
